Prayer to Overcome Food Addiction

Having once struggled with food addiction, specifically sugar addiction, prayer was one of my key strategies to overcome. I needed Supernatural help because my flesh did not want to do the right thing.

Trying to rely upon my flesh to resist food weaknesses was as futile as expecting a fox to guard the hen house!

So I needed the Lord’s help in the following areas regarding food addiction:

A Prayer to Overcome

Here is a prayer I wrote to overcome food addiction for those who are struggling. Struggle means to ”make forceful or violent efforts to get free of restraint or constriction.”

With that definition, this means you are resisting habits that are keeping you bound and making you sick, which is different than just giving into them.

I recommend speaking the following prayer and adapting it to fit your unique situation:

*******

Gracious Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ name, I am so thankful to be Your child. I am thankful that You have made me a new creation in You. Old things have passed away. Behold, new things have come!

I command the spirit of addiction to GO in the name of Jesus, never to return. I renounce the spirit of rebellion and self-will. Per Jesus’ example, I say to You Father, ”Nevertheless, not my will but Your will be done.”

Fill me up with Your Spirit, Lord. Fill me up to overflowing every day so that there is no room for addiction in my life anymore. I speak healing to my body and my mind according to Your word.

You said in Psalm 107:20 that You sent Your word to heal me and deliver me from destruction. I receive Your healing and deliverance in Jesus’ name!

I will not use my liberty as a cloak for addiction. As You said, all things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful; all things are lawful for me but I will not be brought under the power of any.

I will use my freedom to fulfill my purpose in You without hindrance to share the gospel.

I am excited that You are doing a new thing in my heart and mind. You are calling me to a healing journey and to become closer to You day by day as I walk out my healing.

I need Your help to stay free, Lord. Open up my Spiritual eyes so that I can recognize the enemy’s lies. In the past, he has gotten me to believe lies about myself, live those lies as the truth, and follow his suggestion to eat brain-hijacking foods. All to make myself feel better from the emotional turmoil he created in the first place!

But Your word says to ”Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage (Galatians 5:1).”

So I will be diligent to take every thought captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ. I will face the truth about the harm brain hijacking is causing in my life. Give me wisdom to make straight paths for my feet to avoid stress and temptation.

I choose life and blessing over death and cursing. Through the power of your Holy Spirit, I do not present my members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present my body as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable and pleasing to You, which is my reasonable service.

Thank you for the freedom, joy and peace I have in You as I move forward and glorify Your name in my body and Spirit, which belong to You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen

  • I have struggled with food and weight my whole life and I’ve used countless programs to manage them but all have failed. Thank you for this prayer, which reminds me that I am not alone and that the Evil One is trying to make chaos out of the order God blessed me with. Many blessings to you.

    • Thank you, Danielle – I receive that. May you continue to prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers!

  • This is so helpful. You realize that ‘willpower ‘ doesn’t cut it so we need to ask God wherever we see Him for strength and power. It seems to be helping because slowly I’ve been able to break away from the sugar addiction. No way can I look down my nose at a drug addiction. Just pray for everyone.

    • Amen – all praise to our Lord! John 14:6 – “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

  • Thank you Kimberly!

I appreciate the difference you are making in my life and many others.
Knowing that I am not alone in my journey, means a lot.
You remind us simple, beautiful Godly teachings that we tend so easily to forget, while struggling.
You bring to us alive the Love and Fire of God, so we don’t forget how special we are in Lord’s Eyes.
May the Blessings of The Lord come back to you multiplied.

    Sincerely,
    Ilirjana Papajani

    • Thank you SO much, Ilirjana – I appreciate your kind words and pray multiplied blessings back to you. All glory to our Father!
